Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
