British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
