Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in all cars.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The wider defence environment underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official operations, from transport use to communication practices.
